Dear Parents and Carers,
Re: Trial Mobile Phone Ban for Year 8 Students
We are writing to inform you about a new initiative we are trialling with our Year 8 students over the next three weeks. From Tuesday 10th June, we will be implementing a mobile phone ban during the school day for all Year 8 pupils.
This trial is part of our ongoing efforts to support student wellbeing, enhance focus in the classroom, and foster a more positive and engaged school environment. Research and experience have shown that limiting mobile phone use during the school day can significantly reduce distractions, improve concentration, and contribute to better academic outcomes. Additionally, we aim to encourage more meaningful face-to-face interactions among students, helping to build stronger social connections and reduce feelings of isolation or anxiety that can sometimes be linked to excessive phone use.
Students will still be permitted to bring their phones to school; however, they will be required to hand them in at the start of the day. Phones will be securely stored and returned to students at the end of the school day. Any student arriving late to school (after registration) will be required to hand their phone directly to the office staff. If a student needs to leave school for an appointment, they will be able to collect their phone at reception when they sign out.
Students who require access to their phone for medical reasons (as recorded by the school) will be permitted to keep their device with them. However, phones must remain out of sight and may only be used strictly for medical purposes.
If a student is found in possession of their phone during school hours, the phone will be confiscated and must be collected by a parent or carer from the school office.
We will be closely monitoring the impact of this change and will seek feedback from students, staff, and parents.
We appreciate your support in helping us create a focused and positive learning environment. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Thank you for your continued cooperation.
Kind regards
K Mulholland
