The syllabus consists of three contexts:

The Individual – you will study :

  • relationships
    • local environment
    • daily routine; leisure activities
    • health and lifestyle

Citizenship – you will study :

  • environment and social issues
  • travel and tourism
  • media and communications
  • festivals and customs

Employability – you will study :

  • school life
    • part-time jobs
    • future plans

There are two controlled assessment units worth 30 %:

  • Speaking
  • Writing

There are two units externally assessed worth 20 %:  Listening  Reading


What Skills will you Develop?

Students will

  • be encouraged to develop skills to help them take their place in a multi lingual global society
  • be provided with a suitable basis for further study and practical use of French
  • develop the ability to communicate effectively
  • develop a knowledge of the language and language learning skills


Career Pathways

French is spoken in over thirty countries in the world and is also recognised as one of the international languages of trade.

Language GCSEs are regarded as a highly valuable qualification by college and universities; many have made it a requirement for admission.
