
City of Armagh High School held its annual Sports Day on 3rd June. With perfect weather conditions for athletics, competitors took part in a packed programme of track and field events.
The highlight of the day was the Year 11 boys High Jump Competition where Celeb Mongomery set a new school record. Caleb who is an Ulster Schools Athletics qualifier jumped 1.70m, beating the previous record of 1.65m which was set by D Davidson in 1985 and T Smith in 1976. Caleb also won the Shot and Discus events. The talented athlete was this years deserving recipient of the Vernon Cup for Athletics.
Disa Govan and Daniel Metcalfe also produced very good individual performances. Disa won the Long Jump and Daniel won the 100m, 200m and 1500m. Special mention should go to Ruth Irwin who led from the start to win the 800m.
In the Year 10 competition it was Rachel Lucas and William Gillanders who were best on the day.

Rachel won the Shot and High Jump while William won the High Jump and 100m. William was pushed every step of the way by the talented Glenn Hawthorne who won the Long Jump, 400m, Shot and Discus.
The Year 9 competition was dominated by the much improved Christine Oliver. Christine won the Long Jump, High Jump and 100m while Andrew Hoey, last years Athlete of the Year won the 200m, 400m Long Jump and Shot.
Katie Gray and Nathan Stewart are names for the future. As well as being very talented games players they were the best year 8 athletes on the day. Katie won the 200m and Cricket Ball throw while Nathan won the High Jump.
The success of the all the athletes was celebrated at the special Sports Presentation, where the school reflected on the achievement of all its sports stars over the year. Mr Turkington, principal, presented awards for a wide number of sports including netball, hockey, football, cross country, athletics and orienteering. |
